GUWAHATI, June 27 - The Janagosthiya Aikya Mancha today staged a sit-in demonstration at the Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra from 11 am to 2 pm, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the six communities that have been agitating for the status for long.

In a statement, the Mancha said that the BJP government was playing a game of deceit with the legitimate aspirations of the ethnic communities and that it must grant ST status to the six communities Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbongshi, Chutiya, Moran, Mottock and Tea-tribes at the earliest.

The Mancha said that despite repeated assurances from the government all these years, nothing has been done to facilitate the scheduling process of the six communities.

It also warned the government against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, saying that Assam was not a dumping ground for illegal migrants.
