Sit-in protests across Manipur demanding ILP

By The Assam Tribune

IMPHAL, June 11 Hundreds of students today staged sit-in protests against the non-implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur.

Reports from valley districts stated that students staged sit-in demonstrations at Paradise English School in Thoubal district, Ananda Singh Academy and Sacred Heart Schools in Imphal East district and at Lalambung Takhellambam area in Imphal West district. No untoward incident was reported, officials said.

Official sources said the Manipur government has already forwarded the resolution of the Assembly to the Centre and it was now up to the Centre to take a decision on its implementation.

However, social organisations, including Joint Action Committee on ILP, said the demand for ILP implementation was very much within the Constitution and the State government should pursue the matter vigorously with the Centre.

A JACILP spokesman said the number of bonafide Indian citizens, who have come into the State for manual work and as labourers, have far outnumbered the tribal population in Manipurs hill districts.

The social organisations, including student bodies and All Manipur Students Guardians Association, have also been demanding implementation of the ILP in the State. PTI.
