Simran, Debanga, Abhilekh champs in school chess

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 � Simran Ahmed of St Johns School, Debanga Koushik Bhattacharyya of Delhi Public School and Abhilekh Mahanta of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Rajgarh, became champion in Knight, Queen and Pawn Groups respectively in the 5th All Assam School Chess meet organized by Guwahati Chess Academy here today.

Simran remained unbeaten and scored 5.5 points from 7 rounds. Salim Raja of Victoria EM School, Dipu Pradhan of St Peters School, Nazira also scored 5.5 each but were placed 2nd and third positions respectively. In Queen Group, Debanga became champion by scoring 5 points from 6 rounds. Suraj Dey of Rabindra Vidyapith also scored 5 points but he was placed 2nd on the basis of his tie-break score. Rajdeep Das of GC College scored 4.5 points to be in third position. In Pawn Group, Abhilekh Mahanta scored 6 points to claim the title. In this group Bidisha Sarma of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Rajgarh and Prasurjya Das of Army Public School, Narengi scored 5.5 each and were placed 2nd and third position respectively on the basis of their tie-break score. Sarala Birla Gyanjyoti School was adjudged the Best School of the tournament on the basis of their performances.
