SILCHAR, March 16 From traditional khadi kurtas to stylish khadi designer garments, footwear, fashion accessories, pickles and other exquisite products, the Khadi

Utsav, 2014, organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, has everything for everyone. The Khadi Utsav here has turned into an open air supermarket where

shoppers can also enjoy cultural events and fashion shows on the same premises.

A total of 136 stalls of 101 units of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission have been set up. The participants have come from Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and

Rajasthan, besides the Northeast.

The 21-day national khadi exhibition, which began a fortnight ago at the Town Club ground, is drawing crowds of women who are hopping from stall to stall, picking up

khadi silk and other dress materials. Sarif-uz-Zaman Laskar, chairman, Khadi Commission of the Northeast, said that a lot of people have been thronging the fair every

day.

According to him, till the 13th day, the Utsav did business worth Rs 48 lakh, of which Rs 19 lakh comprised khadi products and Rs 29 lakh comprised village industry

products. He said that with more events to follow, the sales are expected to touch the Rs 1-crore mark in the remaining days.

We are not here to do business alone. Our aim is to provide support and exposure to the local artisans of the region, generate rural employment and make the youths

self-reliant, Laskar said.
