JONAI, March 10 - Following the tension over the Silapathar incident, shops and other business establishments at Silapathar and Jonai towns have remaining closed for the fourth day today.
Protests by AASU and other organisations continued in the district demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the vandalisation of the AASU office at Silapathar.
Meanwhile, Army and paramilitary forces have been reinforced in Dhemaji, Silapathar and Jonai townships to maintain peace.
A team of Legislators from Guwahati, led by Minister Keshab Mahanta, visited Silapathar on Thursday and assessed the situation. The team, who met leaders of AASU and other organisations, assured of all necessary steps to redress their grievances.
Assam Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia along with Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay and Political Secretary on Friday also reached Silapathar and interacted with the leaders of protesting organisations.
The situation at Silapathar and Jonai is tense but under control. Top ranking police officials, including an additional DGP, is camping in the district to monitor the situation, according to police sources. Dhemaji district police have arrested 30 persons for their involvement in the Silapathar incident.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate of Dhemaji, by an executive order today clamped Section 144 in the entire district and thereby prohibited any protest rally, gathering and meeting within the district until further order.
