Sialtek residents demand bridge over Barak river

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, April 22 - The residents of Katigorah Chowrangee under Cachar district have placed strong demands for a new bridge over the Barak river at Sialtek-Kalinagar, instead of the proposed location at Katigorah-Badarpur.

According to Hussain Ahmed Barbhuiya, a resident of the area, the proposed location for construction of the new bridge falls on the sinking zone and they anticipate all investment would go in vain.

If the bridge is completed at the proposed location, people of Barak Valley, Tripura and Mizoram would be badly affected. Hence, we want the much-needed bridge to be constructed at Sialtek-Kalinagar, the locals maintained.

Further, locals of Sialtek said that if the new bridge comes up in the area, it would be the fourth bridge within 500 metres, which might put a stumbling block in the flow of the river water.

It may be mentioned that in a meeting with the locals of Katigorah Chowrangee, the NHIDCL sought opinions from the people regarding construction of the bridge.

Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) would execute the construction work of the bridge. Rs 200 crores would be utilised to construct the bridge, including a road and 2 km approach road on either end of the bridge.
