Shutdown hits life in Manipur

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Oct 15 - An 18-hour shut down called by various insurgent outfits crippled life in Manipur on Saturday. However, there were no reports of any untoward incidents during the shut down which concluded at 6 pm.

Besides observing a Black Day, the Co-ordination Committee, popularly known as CorCom, of six insurgent groups called the general strike in the State from midnight yesterday to protest Manipurs merger with India on this day in 1949.

Although the State Secretariat functioned with thin attendance, shops and business houses remained shut. Educational institutions, banks and some government offices in the State capital here were also closed. Imphal was completely shutdown with people remaining indoors. Inter-district and inter-State bus services also did not ply.

The situation was reported tense in Tamenglong district in view of the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation sponsored indefinite bandh along Imphal-Jiribam road demanding immediate repairing of the highway near Makru Bridge.

However, the general strike did not have much impact in the hill district headquarters in Churachandpur and Senapati. Sources said elaborate security measures were put in place to prevent any disruptive activities.
