JORHAT, April 24 - Several shots were reportedly fired at a petrol pump by two motorbike-borne youths suspected to be ULFA-I militants at Sapekhati in Charaideo district near the Assam-Nagaland border on Monday night.

As per information from an official source, one among the duo fired indiscriminately at Brahmaputra Fuel Centre at around 8.50 pm.

The source stated that there were no reports of any casualties in the incident as the customers and the petrol pump employees managed to escape to a safe spot after hearing gunshots.

The source claimed that a hand grenade was also thrown at the petrol pump which, however, failed to explode. Police and CRPF force personnel rushed to the petrol pump. The incident created panic among the public while security forces launched an operation in nearby areas to nab the youths.

Further, the source informed that the miscreants reportedly fled towards the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border near Kanubari Tea Estate after the shootout following which there was a report of another firing in the area.

It may be mentioned here that on the night of February 5 this year, suspected ULFA-I militants had fired several rounds targeting the office of a tea garden under Borhat Police Station in Charaideo district. Few window panes of the office of the tea garden besides the historic Dhodarali were damaged due to the firing.
