Shillong bans repair of vehicles on street

SHILLONG, April 12 - With streets in Meghalaya State capital Shillong being choked, the district police have issued an order banning repair of vehicles, fitting of accessories on the roads and also directing vehicle owners to remove modified silencers and LED lights.

�It has been observed that there has been a rampant repair of vehicles, fitting of accessories carried out by different workshops and proprietors on public road, streets and thoroughfares causing annoyance to the public and free flow of traffic,� the notification issued by East Khasi Hills SP Davis R Marak said.

The order also observed that vehicle owners have been fitting modified silencers on their vehicles and also LED lights which have been causing annoyance to the general public.

As such an order under section 101 of Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 was passed to stop such repairs and remove modified silencers and LED lights. �Anyone not obeying the order may be arrested under section 102 and on conviction would pay a fine of Rs 5,000,� the order said.

Moreover, the traffic police have realised a fine of Rs 6.65 lakh during March this year from traffic violators in the State capital. The traffic branch collected a fine of Rs 5.17 lakh in February.
