Shillong Autumn Festival revived, begins on Oct 26

By STAFF Correspondent

SHILLONG, Oct 20 - After a hiatus of five years, the popular Shillong Autumn Festival is back this year and will be held for two days beginning on October 26 near the picturesque Umiam Lake.

The event is being organised by Opus Production run by a group of friends with the blessings of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and other government organisations.

The event was run by a group of hoteliers and now they do not have the requisite time to invest for hosting the event. So it was discontinued in 2012 after a successful run of seven years, A Kyntia of Opus Production said.

Giving details about the two-day event, she said it would be a family-oriented festival in which a series of events have been lined up keeping in mind children, young adults and families.

A lot of the old flavours of the Shillong Autumn Festival have been retained and there will be food stalls apart from popular water sports, which will be organised by the MTDC.

For children there will be a paint ball competition, tattoo stalls, magic shows, trampoline and a stage exclusively for kids and young adults. The stage will be available to anyone who wishes to showcase their talent in singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, etc., Andreas War, another member of the event management group, said.

We want the Shillong Autumn Festival to be synonymous with other major festivals like the Hornbill festival of Nagaland, War said.
