SHGs major contributors to Dhubri�s economy

DHUBRI, April 20 - Setting up an example of women empowerment, the Self Help Groups run by the fairer sex have become major contributors to the economy of Dhubri district.

According to Hiranya Jyoti Bayan, Lead District Manager of Dhubri District, these women-run groups are not only doing well but have become major contributors to the economy of the district and have also helped in curbing many crimes against women by making themselves self sufficient. While attending a programme for ceremonial distribution of record books to self-help groups organised by City Mission Management Unit of Dhubri Municipal Board at District Library, the District Manager said, �In many villages of the district, there are families in which the woman, who is a member of a self-help group, earns more than her male counterpart.�

Bayan also informed that these groups have engaged themselves in various types of productive activities that are not just success stories for the groups but a strong second line of financial defence for many families and the society at large. �Apart from making the members of these groups self sufficient, many groups have also engaged people directly or indirectly making them beneficiaries,� said Bayan.

It was also informed that the products of these groups are mostly procured by business houses and are sold all over the country. While attending the programme, the Chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board Toma Das said that the Self Help Groups play a major role in the development of small scale industries of the district. The programme was also attended by Pranjit Wari, CEO of Dhubri Municipal Board, among others.
