Sharmila produced in court

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Oct 12 - Human rights crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila was produced before the court here on Monday in connection with the case relating to her on-going fast unto death agitation demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 from the region.

She told the media that she wanted a clear-cut verdict from the court. How long are they supposed to keep me like this, asked Sharmila, who has been arrested, released and re-arrested several times since 2000 on the charge of attempting to commit suicide.

In December last year, the Union Government had indicated that it had decided to repeal Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code that makes attempt to commit suicide an offence punishable with imprisonment for up to one year.
