Sharmila hopes for a change in Manipur

IMPHAL, Jan 28 � Human rights activist Irom Sharmila today said the politicians in the State are shameless for making false promises. She, however, urged the public not to sell their votes in the Manipur Assembly polls on January 28 adding she wants to see a change this time.

Sharmila, who has been on fast unto death since November 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958, told the media persons before she was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate here that the political leaders here are shameless as they make false promises during the election times.

She said she is ashamed of those politicians who call themselves social workers or activists instead of serving and looking after the people�s wish. Are they not ashamed to hear people talking against them, she questioned.

The Iron Lady of Manipur appealed to the public to think of what the people are actually longing for instead of selling their votes in the polls.

Sharmila who was periodically produced before the court after her arrest 12 years ago after she heard the killing of 10 civilians by the security forces at Malom in the outskirt of the state capital Imphal on November 2 2000.

Since then she was arrested on the charge of �attempting to commit suicide� under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.
