Shakuntala Choudhury felicitated

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 � Senior social worker and eminent Gandhian Shakuntala Choudhury was felicitated in a function held at the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Assam Branch, at Sarania today.

Members from more than 26 organisations, along with individuals and groups joined in to pay their respects and recall the contribution of Choudhury who was recently conferred with the prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj award by President Pratibha Patil in Mumbai.

Several speakers spoke about the life and work of the 91 year old Gandhian, who was chosen by the late Amolprova Das to work for KGNMT in 1946.

Noted Gandhian, Natwar Thakkar, described her as a dedicated worker, who was among those who kept the Gandhian movement going in Assam. Distinguished social worker and Gandhian, Hema Bharali, appreciated the role of Choudhury in the KGNMT and wished her health and happiness.

After her felicitation, Choudhury spoke briefly to her admirers and wondered whether she really deserved such warmth and honour. She said that she was overwhelmed by the love and affection that people had given her, and expressed her gratitude to all those present.
