Shahil wins silver in Asian chess

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 - Assam Chess prodigy Shahil Dey proved his talent again in the international front by winning the silver medal in the Asian Youth U-8 Chess Championship that concluded in Suwon, South Korea today.

Seeded 5th in the starting rank and leading the tournament till the halfway, Shahil created history by becoming the first player from Assam to win an international medal in chess. Shahil scored 6.5 points out of 9 rounds.

Earlier, Shahil won the gold medal in the recently concluded Commonwealth Chess Championship at Delhi. He is also the current National U-7 champion.

Shahil will next represent India at the World U-8 Chess Championship to be held at Greece from October 24 to November 7.

All Assam Chess Association (Adhoc Committee) congratulated Shahil for his achievement, state a release.
