GUWAHATI, April 19 - Current U-9 national champion Shahil Dey defeated International Master H Balasubramaniam of Tamil Nadu in the 1st Sardar Prakash Singh Memorial International Chess Tournament at Sonipat, Haryana today.

Balasubramaniam is 450 rank higher than Shahil in international rating. It was their third round match of the championship. Earlier, Shahil beat two other higher rated players in first two rounds of the championship. The Assam boy is at the joint third position with four points after completion of fifth round of the 10-round tournament.
