By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 7 Extending its full support to the movement by social activist Anna Hazare for the civil societys Lokpal Bill, the Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has decided to launch a public sit-in demonstration at Dighalipukhuripar on April 8 from 11 am to 1 pm.

The SGBG would observe the day as solidarity day to support the cause. SGBG president Dhiren Baruah told The Assam Tribune that the NGO has asked all the like minded individuals, organizations, students bodies, etc., to support the movement for a corruption-free country.

There are many things in the Governments proposed Lokpal Bill that clash with the demands of the civil societies. According to it, Lokpal will not have any power to either initiate action suo motu in any case or even receive complaints of corruption from general public. The civil societys Bill, Lokpal will have power to initiate investigation suo motu in any case and also directly entertain complaints from the public, Baruah said.

The government has proposed to make Lokpal an advisory body, which, after an enquiry into the case, will forward its report to competent authority. In civil societys Bill however, Lokpal would have the power to initiate prosecution against any one after completion of investigation in any case.

There are many such points that are needed to be raised forcefully throughout the country to uproot corruption from the nation. Our solidarity day is an attempt to unite civil society organisations of the State for the noble cause, he added.

Meanwhile, the Civil Society of Guwahati has decided to hold a candle light vigil tomorrow at the Shanti Uddayan Dighalipukhuri to strengthen the endeavor lead by veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare.
