SGBG flays admin, police for failing to implement SC order

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - Voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has condemned both the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and the Guwahati City Police authorities for not executing the Supreme Court order on bursting of high decibel (dB) crackers in the city during the ongoing Diwali festivities.

SGBG general secretary Satyen Doloi told this newspaper here today that apathy of the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and the Guwahati City Police authorities to implement the Supreme Courts order is tantamount to defying the apex court. The SC should take steps against both the Kamrup (M) district administration and the Guwahati City Police authorities on this ground.

There seemed to be no move on the part of the district administration and the City Police to prevent sale of such high dB crackers within the limits of the city, the SGBG office-bearer alleged.

Moreover, many Guwahatians are also not abiding by the apex courts order in this connection. They are also seemingly using the public roads to burst crackers on. Some even encourage their children to indulge in this mischief to the utter consternation of the road users.

High-sounding crackers come from places outside the State. Besides affecting the environment, these crackers also affect the economy. The State administration should stop business in all such crackers with a firm hand, he said.

There should also be a social movement against the high dB crackers. Bursting of crackers has also become a part of our marriage celebrations. This should also be stopped.

If we fail to stop all such practices, we shall make ourselves vulnerable to the twin danger of adverse impacts of noise and air pollution, said the SGBG office-bearer.
