SHILLONG, Dec 9 - The Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance Government on Friday introduced the Meghalaya Anatomy Bill, 2017 to help overcome the shortage of cadavers in medical institutions for educational purposes.
The Bill introduced by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, �Considerable difficulty is experienced in obtaining bodies of deceased persons for educational purposes in medical institutions.�
Under the Bill, unclaimed bodies in hospitals and in prisons would be handed over to an authorised officer who would then hand over the body to the medical institutions for anatomical examination. The same procedure will be followed in the case of unclaimed bodies found in public places. Besides, any person can express in writing before two or more witnesses to hand over his/her body after death to the medical institutions.
The Chief Minister also introduced the Meghalaya Nursing Council (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance (Amendment) Bill, 2017. The Government also introduced the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Members� Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment), Bill, 2017. Minister in-charge Taxation, Zenith Sangma introduced the Meghalaya Passenger and Goods Taxation Act (Amendment), Bill 2017.
