Senior citizens hail move on Naga problem

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - The Guwahati Senior Citizens Association has welcomed the decision of the Government of India to resolve the six-decade-old Naga problem through Constitutional means.

The association, in its meeting held today under the presidentship of DN Chakravartty, observed that while there could not be any disagreement on bestowing maximum privileges to the Naga people within the framework of the Indian Constitution, there should not be any reason why the geographical territory of Assam or any other State of Northeast India should be disturbed only to satisfy the whimsical and baseless demand of a section of the Naga people.

The association also expressed strong resentment at the most ridiculous and objectionable behaviour of the Indian Parliamentarians who have degraded the Parliament from a sacred forum of debate into an arena of combat.

The association appealed to the State Governments and the Centre to prepare a correct NRC for Assam without surrendering in any way to the unreasonable demand of anti-national elements or of a section of the Indian people who are more loyal to religion.

Several members, including Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Khanindra Chandra Das, took part in the discussion. Mahanta spoke on the preparations to celebrate the 16th foundation day of the association on August 27 in which Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, will be the chief guest.
