GUWAHATI, Nov 18 � Octogenarian artist Gopal Mahanta was felicitated by the Jorhat branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha along with several other organisations on his 85th birthday on November 14, a press release received here stated.
The felicitatory function was organised in collaboration with Seujpur Mahila Samiti and Seujpur Moina Parijat of Jail Road at the latter�s office premises. A meeting on the occasion was presided over by the president of Jorhat district Sahitya Sabha, Niroda Gogoi Bora. The senior artist was presented a citation, seleng sador and gamosa.
The senior artist is credited with illustrating several English and Assamese books, besides scores of magazines. He has also designed the emblems of many educational institutions, besides drawing lifelike portraits of many a personality. He also drew the portraits of Sankardeva and Madhavdeva, besides 20 martyrs of the six-year-long Assam Agitation.
Reacting to the felicitation, Mahanta said, �my toils over the years has been for the society. I am indebted for the love and affection showered on me by the society today. This felicitatory function will forever remain a red letter day in my life�, he claimed with humility.
He informed the meet that indifferent health had in recent times hampered his efforts to complete work on illustrating the Kirtan. He felt that his work during the period 1960 to 1982 were indeed his best output ever. The senior artist reminiscenced his close association with late artists Madhav Baishya and Muhi Deka.
