Seminar on new design trends

GUWAHATI, Dec 25 � A two-day seminar on �Creation of Awareness for New Design Trends� was organised by the National Centre for Design and Product Development (NCDPD) at the Convention Hall, NEDFi here recently.

The idea behind organizing the seminar was to create awareness among the artisans, entrepreneurs and exporters of the North East region about the technological and design innovations, packaging techniques and sustainable growth in the cane and bamboo sector of the region.

The first day of the seminar touched a range of topics including design innovation, export marketing procedure, selection of products in relation to the markets, product pricing and merchandising.

SS Gupta, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles, who was the chief guest of the seminar, also interacted with the participants of the seminar along with Ravi K Passi, chairman, NCDPD, Rakesh Kumar and RK Srivastava of NCDPD.

Srivastava discussed the need of product innovation for NER region while Rakesh Kumar spoke about the role of Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts and Design Development in Export market vis-�-vis the North East.

A range of other market-related issues were also discussed at length on the first day.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Bamboo and Cane Development Institute (BCDI), Agartala, Tripura and the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) where both institutions agreed tom work together to train and develop skills and technology in handicrafts.

BCDI and USTM propose to begin various training courses in cane and bamboo including Postgraduate Diploma Course in Bamboo Cultivation and Resource Utilization. BCDI and USTM will work towards making the courses job-oriented and the leading courses in the industry. They will also facilitate involvement of national and international agencies.

An exhibition of the products developed of NCDPD and BCDI under various design and product development projects was also organised at the exhibition hall during the seminar. The exhibition is jointly organised by NEDFi, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts and NCDPD.
