Security forces step up operations against KPLT

DIPHU/DIMAPUR, Jan 9 � Security forces have intensified combing operations against the Karbi Peoples� Liberation Tigers (KPLT) in the eastern side of Karbi Anglong, even as inmates of the relief camps have started making their way back home in limited numbers under strict security vigil.

Although no untoward incident was reported in the last few days, the situation is far from normal, with nearly three thousand violence-affected victims still housed in the relief camps. Most of the victims however, are still apprehensive about the existing security arrangements.

A senior KPLT cadre has meanwhile been arrested during the ongoing operation, and weapons recovered.The cadre identified as Sheron Teron, is a self-styled corporal of the KPLT.

So far 24 suspects including cadres from both the KPLT and Naga Rengma Hill Protection Force (NRHPF) have been arrested in connection with the violence which broke out in Khuwanigaon under Barpathar police station on December 27 and eventually spreading on to other places as well.

Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong MJ Mahanta told The Assam Tribune, situation is largely under control and efforts are made to avert any kind of untoward incident.

�Mahanta also said that the joint operation will continue for the next few days.

He added that security cover has been provided in the villages and vigil also intensified in all the vulnerable places.

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team of Nagaland Police constituted to probe the incident related to recovery of nine youths in Dimapur has already started its investigation.

The SIT headed by a police officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police is in constant touch with the Assam Police in regard to the ongoing investigation.
