GUWAHATI, May 2 � All the police and security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations have been put on high alert apprehending backlash by members of the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) following the arrest of Ranjan Daimary alias DR Nabla, the chairman of the outfit.
Official sources told The Assam Tribune that instructions have been issued to the Superintendents of Police of all the districts to maintain strict vigil on the situation to prevent any untoward incident. Sources said that the possibility of the NDFB anti-talk faction militants trying to trigger off explosions in retaliation to the arrest of their chief cannot be ruled out. On the other hand, the members of the outfit can even try to kidnap someone to put pressure on the Government to secure the release of their chief and considering all these aspects, the Government issued instructions to the SPs to keep strict vigil on the situation.
Meanwhile, security sources said that in recent times, the anti-talk faction of the NDFB, formed after a division in the ranks of the NDFB following the serial blasts on October 30, 2008, suffered severe setbacks as the security forces achieved considerable success in the operations against the members of the outfit. However, members of the outfit are still indulging in extortions and kidnappings in the areas bordering Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh taking advantage of the lack of adequate security cover in the area. Members of the outfit also launched several joint operations with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
Giving an account of the success of the security forces in the operations against the NDFB, Army sources said that 28 members of the outfit were killed in the first four months of this year. Sources revealed that according to records available, 13 members of the anti-talk faction of the NDFB were killed in the counter-insurgency operations in January this year, seven were killed in February, five were killed in March and three were killed in April. Last year, more than 70 members of the outfit were killed.
Giving reasons for the success of the operations against the militants, Army sources said that improved sharing of intelligence among the forces operating on the ground is one of the main reasons for the success against the NDFB. Sources said that area domination of the areas where the NDFB members have their bases also improved, while, more and more people are coming forward to inform the police and security forces about extortion attempts by the members of the outfit.
