DOOMDOOMA, Aug 8 - Security has been beefed up in Tinsukia district in view of the forthcoming Independence Day celebrations.

According to a police source, an eight-member hard-core ULFA (I) cadre group headed by Rupom Asom and Udai Asom has been taking shelter along Assam-Arunachal border to carry out sabotage activities in the district during these days along with NSCN ( K) cadres. Security forces have intensified their operations in the district especially along Assam-Arunachal border.

Amidst tight security, an incident of firing took place on Saturday night at Lajum village under Kakopothar PS. According to a report, a police patrol signalled to stop a bike coming from Dirak side towards Kakopothar with two youths along NH-52 near Beenapnai LP School of Lajum village. But, ignoring the police signal, the youths fled through a bylane by the side of the school. When police chased them one of the youths fired at the police party. Police also retaliated. But, the youths managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. No casualty of either side has been reported.

Later, police picked up a youth named Partha Protim Dangaria for interrogation. Police suspects hand of ULFA (I) behind the incident. This incident has increased the headache of police and other security forces engaged in the district.

Meanwhile, troops of DAO Division of Indian Army apprehended three Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and linkmen of proscribed militant group ULFA (I) from Borali village under Kakopothar PS on Sunday night. They have been identified as Monikanta Moran, Biman Moran and Milon Moran. According to Army, these three OGWs were trying to convince four youths of the village to join the proscribed militant group. After initial interrogation, the Army handed over the three linkmen and the four youths to Kakopothar PS.
