SHILLONG, Aug 13 - Adequate security arrangements have been made ahead of the Independence Day celebrations here, slated for August 15.
Although the State has been by and large peaceful, police officials today reiterated that they would leave nothing to chance, and that patrol parties have been deployed in various parts of the capital city.
East Khasi district SP Claudia Lyngwa said that there is adequate police force on the ground to thwart any mischief. As part of the security arrangements, vehicles are being frisked in several parts of the State capital. Police outposts along the border have been asked to keep extra vigil, she added.
The SP said the police wants the people to feel safe, adding that there are no reports of any militants trying to cross over to Meghalaya from across the border.
As a routine exercise, the Border Security Force also heightens security measures across the international border with Bangladesh on such occasions. The State shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh and some stretches have remained unfenced and these gaps are the prime target of militants to cross over.
In the last few years, the Independence Day has been celebrated in a bigger way after the Meghalaya High Court ruling against bandhs called by militant groups. Programmes are organised at Police Bazaar (Khyndilad) to attract the local people and tourists. Schoolchildren have also started participating in the celebrations in large numbers.
PTI adds from Itanagar: Security measures have been beefed up in Arunachal Pradesh in the run-up to the Independence Day, the police said on Tuesday.
More security personnel have been deployed in Itanagar while checking and frisking of vehicles have been intensified, Capital SP Tumme Amo said.
Night patrolling is being conducted in all vulnerable places to thwart any untoward incident. Verification of inner line permits (ILPs) has been increased in all check gates of the State, while hotels in the capital are being checked as a preventive measure, Amo added.
The ILP is an official document required by outsiders to travel in Arunachal Pradesh.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu will unfurl the Tricolour at the Indira Gandhi Park here, the main venue of the Independence Day celebrations.
