Secretariat employees join anti-CAB protest

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 - A section of employees in the Assam Secretariat today joined the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and shouted anti-CAB and anti-BJP slogans along with the protesters who had been demonstrating in front of the Secretariat since morning.

However, the police prevented the employees from coming out of the Secretariat complex by putting up barricades. Some visitors to the Secretariat also joined the employees in the protest.

The agitating employees of the Secretariat gathered at the main entrance within the Secretariat premises when students from different educational institutions started assembling in Super Market area.

�My first identity is that I am an Assamese. So this is my duty to raise my voice in this critical juncture,� an agitating Secretariat employee said.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here today, the Assam Sachibalaya Sewa Sanstha today urged all sections of public to maintain peace and harmony. It also urged the people to continue with the protest in a democratic manner and not to destroy any public property.

In the statement, general secretary of the Sanstha Partha Hazarika also appealed to the BJP-led government to reconsider the CAB.

Earlier today, students of the Gauhati University carried out a rally against the CAB. They took out the rally from the main gate of the institution up to Adabari. Hundreds of students took part in the rally and shouted slogans demanding scrapping of the CAB.

CRPF beat up pedestrian: One Arjun Biswas of Bonda sustained severe head injuries when CRPF personnel beat him up in front of the Assam Tribune Buildings around 7 pm today. Later he was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in a police patrolling vehicle.

The incident took place after the district administration imposed curfew in the city.

According to an eyewitness, the CRPF personnel indiscriminately lathicharged a group of pedestrians including women without any provocation. In the incident SS Ansari, an employee at the Guwahati GPO, also sustained minor injuries.
