Second phase poll campaign ends

GUWAHATI, April 9 - Campaign for the second and final phase of the Assam Assembly polls concluded at 5 pm this evening. Polls in the second phase will be held in 61 constituencies on April 11.

The first phase, comprising 65 constituencies, was held on April 4.

A total of 1,04,35,277 voters will seal the fate of 525 candidates � 48 of those being women � in the second phase of polls.

While the Congress has fielded 57 candidates, the AIUDF fielded 47, followed by the BJP with 35. The AGP has 19 candidates, followed by the BPF (10), CPM (9) and CPI (5). Also in the fray are 214 Independent candidates and 129 from other parties.

The break-up of voters is 53,91,204 males and 50,44,051 females.

Among the heavyweight candidates in the fray are Prafulla Kumar Mahanta (AGP), Himanta Biswa Sarma (BJP), Phani Bhusan Choudhury (AGP), Rakibul Hussain (Congress), Atul Bora (BJP), Badruddin Ajmal (AIUDF), Akon Bora (Congress), Pramila Rani Brahma (BPF), Chandan Brahma (BPF) and Ananta Deka (CPM).

As in the first phase, hectic politicking by political parties marked the second phase of poll campaign.

The BJP, which is contesting in 35 constituencies, roped in a large number of Central leaders, including the Prime Minister and Union ministers. Among those who addressed rallies were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other ministers, like Smriti Irani, Shahnawaz Hussain and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

For the Congress, UPA chairperson and party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi were the star campaigners. Several other prominent Congress leaders, like Salman Khurshid, Anand Sharma, Raj Babbar and Ghulam Nabi Azad were among those who addressed public rallies in the State.

For the AIUDF, party president Badruddin Ajmal was the star campaigner as he addressed a large number of rallies.
