By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, Feb 12 - The Assam Police today carried out search operation in various places of the State to trace three of its staff against whom a case had been lodged recently for allegedly concealing seized gold worth around Rs 4 crore.

Sources said that drives in search of SI Nipu Kalita, Havildar Faizur Rehman and Home Guard Afzal Ali of Dispur Police Station, were carried out today in some areas of Baksa district, Tezpur and Guwahati. But all those attempts went in vain.

On the other hand, the court today sent all the three gold smugglers namely Wahajutil Shah, Wahidur Rahman and Ajmil, all from Manipur who appeared before police and levelled an allegation against the three cops, to six days police custody.

SI Nipu Kalita, Havildar Faizur Rehman and Home Guard Afzal Ali had reportedly chased the three gold smugglers on the Jorabat-Nongpoh road on January 15. They had reportedly seized 60 gold biscuits from the smugglers at Nongpoh, but had later released them.

Kalita and his team allegedly did not report the seizure to senior officials of the department. Sources in Assam Police informed that another seven to eight persons (not police personnel) might also be involved in the case and were present during the operation on January 15.

The three police personnel have been absconding since February 4 when the three arrested gold smugglers appeared before the police.
