By PRANJAL BHUYAN

GUWAHATI, Jan 17 In an ambitious project, the NF Railway Central Hospital at Maligaon will soon have a state-of-the-art seamless operation theatre being built at a cost of Rs 2.4 crore.

Speaking toThe Assam Tribune, Dr AK Saikia, medical director of the hospital, said that seamless OT will have epoxy-coated walls which will be completely sealed.

This will ensure that air from outside is not able to enter and the air inside the OT remain in a positive pressure state.

The air will be recycled and there will be ACs outside the coated wall. It will consist of hermetically sealed door. This kind of technology is being introduced for the first time in the North East, Dr Saikia said.

He added, such a technology will ensure that chances of bacterial growth is nil and improve the quality of operations.

The project is expected to be completed within the current financial year.

HEPA filters will be installed in the OT which prevents even bacteria of 0.2 micron from entering a space.

The temperature inside the place will be maintained throughout the year. It is similar to the technology used in space shuttles, said Dr Saikia, adding that the waste products from the OT will be taken out by a separate way.

The seamless OT will come up in the existing hospital building.

It will be a three- chamber theatre. There will be a demarcated area for clean air and it will consist of a smart door so that outsiders cannot come in. There will be swipe cards for authorised personnel, Dr Saikia said.

A new system of sterilisers, equipments and anesthesia will also be introduced as part of the modernisation project.

The NF Railway Central Hospital conducts 3-5 operations on average every day and deals with gynaecology, orthopaedics, ENT and general surgeries.
