School Games taekwondo gets off

GUWAHATI, Feb 2 � The 57th U-17 National School Games Taekwondo Championship got off to a colourful start at the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai here today.

Altogether 259 participants from 18 affiliated units of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) are in the fray for titles in 10 different weight categories in both boys and girls sections.

The championship has been organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare under the aegis of SGFI.

Inaugurating the championship, State Sports Minister Ajit Singh said Assam now has adequate sports infrastructure of international standard and the State has been able to host a good number of international and national events after the 2007 National Games. State youngsters are also doing well in national circuits, specifically boxing and archery. He urged the Central Government for more funds so that the standard of games and sports improve.

Attending the opening ceremony as guest of honour, Sindhushree Khullar, Secretary to the Govt of India, Ministry of Youth Affair and Sports, praised the Assam Government for creating top class sports infrastructure. She hoped Assam will be able to host more sporting events successfully.

Anjan Sarma, incharge Director of Sports, welcomed the gathering and participants in the function where Sailesh, Principal Secretary, Sports and Youth Welfare, Pradip Hazarika, Director General of Sports Authority of Assam, Onkar Kedia, Joint Secretary to the Govt of India, Ministry of Youth Affair and Sports, Aloke Khare representative of SGFI were present as guests on the occasion where participating contingents performed a march past.

Today�s results: (Boys 44-48kg) Gold-Parki Kishan (Guj), silver- Satyam Verma (Bih), bronze- Jubin Ahmed (Asm), Vishal Kr Gupta (UP). (Girls 30-35kg) Gold- Sunedha Rathi (Del), More Puja (Mah), bronze- Maria Jaison (Ker), Gautama S Naik (Goa).
