School bus hits bike, 1 killed

GUWAHATI, Jan 25 � Irate public set a traffic isle on fire after a speeding school bus (AMU 2697) hit a Santro car and subsequently a motorcycle (ASOI AE 9798) leading to the death of the motorcycle borne person on the spot near Jonali area around 9:15 this morning.

This led to a chaotic situation and the movement of vehicles on the RG Baruah Road remained crippled for over an hour. Later, SP(Traffic) rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

A section of local residents have blamed the lackadaisical approach of the police and civil administration behind such recurring incident.

Pranjal Sarma, a local resident of Jonali area, said: �Even though there is a traffic police post, we rarely get to see a police personnel stationed there. Even today, no traffic police personnel was present when the accident took place.�

The dead has been identified as Anup Kumar Das (35) and hails from Barpeta. One Sapan Kumar Sarkar sustained injuries and was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

The school bus of Sudershan Public School (formerly Disneyland School) coming towards Chandmari area was carrying school children, although no school children was injured during the mishap.

Onlookers alleged that the school bus hit the Santro car (AS 01 AD 0519) on the right side and the motorcycle simultaneously near Senduri Ali, and the impact of the hit was so hard that the motorcyclist came under the wheels of the bus, which remained on the move even after the crash.

Manabendra Deka, who was driving the car, said: � I was coming from gym and just when I was trying to cross the road to make my way towards Panjabari, the school bus banged at my vehicle.�

SP (Traffic) Bibekananda Das assured people that the culprit would be booked and also rued the acute shortage of manpower due to which it becomes virtually impossible to station traffic police personnel in every point.
