GUWAHATI, May 7 - A scholarship specially designed to assist persons with disabilities across the North Eastern region has reached out to 117 students, helping their dream come true.
With the scholarship given by telecom tower infrastructure provider Bharti Infratel, 13 specially able persons are pursuing professional or technical courses, 87 students are pursuing graduation and 17 are pursuing post-graduation.
When financial constraint became a roadblock for Azmal Hussain, a hearing impaired student, despite his selection to the IIT Delhi, the scholarship programme helped him to fulfil his dream of studying in the premier institution.
�I am immensely thankful to the scholarship programme, which has assisted me to pursue higher studies in a prestigious institution. I believe the project comes as a big encouragement for disabled students like me who want to pursue higher education and dream of a bright future,� Azmal, who hails from Barpeta district, said.
Similarly, Visazo Kikhi from Nagaland, a student with locomotor disability, who is pursuing his MBBS at the Government Medical College at Kozhikode in Kerala, said that the scholarship reduced his family�s burden and helped him in fulfilling his dreams.
According to DS Rawat, MD and CEO of the company, in the very first year of scholarship programme, Bharti Infratel has been able to support the career aspirations of 117 students with disabilities. He said that the number of students under this initiative would soon be increased.
Launched in partnership with Shishu Sarothi, a non-profit organisation, the primary objective of the scholarship programme is to provide financial support and aid to students with disabilities for pursuing professional or technical education, which in turn will help them become employment-ready, and thus self-reliant.
Shishu Sarothi implements and identifies deserving students from lower economic backgrounds. The date for accepting applications for the scholarship for the year 2017-18 will be announced during the current month.
