Scam detected in digital classroom schemes

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 25 - A scam of around Rs 12 lakh has been detected in Gogamukh College, 36 kms east from here, in making a digital classroom and digital library. This has been alleged by Zasym Ahmed, the proprietor of Zyna & GF Infosystem, a firm which got the contract for the digitisation work.

According to Ahmed, his firm was awarded the work order on March 31, 2014 of the contract based on the quotation he had filed on February 15, 2014 of Rs 12 lakhs. When he started his work, the principal of the college, Thagee Ram Gogoi asked him not to do the work on digital library but to submit the bills. The principal also allegedly asked him to complete the work on digital classroom in Rs 10 lakhs.

Ahmed also alleged that Gogoi forced him to take Rs 50,000 while signing to have received Rs 1 lakh as advanced payment for that work. The principal also allegedly damaged an expensive camera meant for video conferencing installed by the contractor for the digital classroom. For that the contractor also replaced the camera with a new one.

Moreover, the principal also took a desktop computer from Zasym Ahmed and refused to give its price. The contractor said that the college paid him Rs 4.5 lakhs out of the total cost involved and has not paid a single penny of the remaining amount of the digitisation work since then. The principal also allegedly misbehaved with Ahmed and insulted him to be a Bangladeshi when he called him for the payment.

Meanwhile, the contractor has appealed the whole issue before the Chief Minister of Assam and the Director of Higher Education through the Deputy Commissioner.
