SC seeks details of mercy petitions

NEW DELHI, Feb 22 � Fate of death row prisoner Mahendranath Das is still uncertain, as Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the State Chief Secretaries to submit all records pertaining to pending mercy petitions within three day.

The apex court bench headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi will examine pendency of all the 17 mercy petitions pending for several years before President Pratibha Patil seeking commutation of death sentences into life imprisonment direction.

The Central Government�s counsel told the Court that that the Centre could file details of the mercy petitions pending with the President but cannot file the details of the mercy petitions pending with the State governments in the absence of response from them.
