SC gives Govt, NHPC 4 weeks to submit papers

NEW DELHI, Nov 9 � The Supreme Court on Monday gave four weeks� time to NHPC, Ministry of Environment and Forest and Union Power Ministry to submit documents in connection with the construction of mega dams in the North-east.

The Supreme Court was responding to a writ petition filed by Assam Public Works (APWs) challenging the construction of mega dam in the North-east. The NGO has sought directions to NHPC to release the minimum sustenance flow natural water of from the SLHEP Dam all through the year for ecological sustenance of the river which will keep the river ecologically healthy specially in the four � five months of lean period of the winter.

It has also asked for directions fro MoEF and NHPC. to reassess the downstream impact of the proposed middle and upper Subansiri dams up to Brahmaputra, and not just 10 Km downstream of the dam only and to release, from the middle and upper Subansiri.
