Satellite imagery to detect poppy cultivation

NEW DELHI, May 16 � The Centre has drawn up a fresh action plan to detect illicit poppy cultivation in Arunachal Pradesh using satellite imagery.�

A comprehensive �action plan� for identification and destruction of illicit poppy cultivation has been prepared. The action plan includes procurement of satellite imagery from ADRIN and further circulation to the nodal officer for identification and destruction of poppy cultivation in theState, Minister of State for Home Affairs, M Ramachandran said in reply to a question by Smriti Irani.

Illegal poppy cultivation has been destroyed in the districts of Lohit andAnjaw in Arunachal. In 2010, cultivation in 250 acres was destroyed in the two districts. The next year cultivation in some six acres was destroyed, the Minister said.
