Sasoni Merbeel eco-tourism project

DIBRUGARH, July 4 � Amidst a festive mood despite inclement weather, the ambitious Sasoni Merbeel Eco-Tourism Project was inaugurated on Sunday by Chandan Brahma, Assam Minister of Tourism and Transport in the presence of a huge enthusiastic crowd. The project is located near Naharkatia in Dibrugarh district.

The inauguration was graced by dignitaries including Pranati Phukan, Minister of Handloom & Textile , Sericulture, Cultural Affairs , KK Nath, Executive Director (Ops), OIL, Duliajan, Monalisa Goswami, Director , Assam Tourism and innumerable local people of Sasoni. Chandan Brahma laid the foundation stone for further developments at the Sasoni Merbeel Eco-Tourism Project, the first community-based eco-tourism project in the State.

On the occasion a tourist cottage, built with the support of Tinsukia-based entrepreneur Kamakhya Borthakur, was inaugurated. Pranati Phukan commended OIL for taking such initiatives and requested the company to invest more in the eco-tourism sector of the region. She announced to provide various support systems to start a craft village in the project location. She also requested OIL to promote the Jeypore Rain Forest and to declare Naharkatia oil rig as a world heritage site. KK Nath, Executive Director (Ops), OIL, Duliajan also assured the company�s support in preparing the detailed project report to promote Naharkatia oil rig as a world heritage site.

Brahma later announced sanction of Rs 3 crore by the Govt. of Assam out of total allocation of Rs 5 crore for the project and also said that they are initiating a similar project in Kajalgaon, in the BTC area.
