Saraighat bridge in good condition

GUWAHATI, Jan 5 � The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) today said there is no cause for worry regarding safety of the Saraighat bridge. �The Saraighat bridge over the river Brahmaputra near Guwahati is in excellent condition and has been functioning very well since its construction in 1962. There is no cause of concern or worry over the safety of this bridge,� said an NFR official.

NFR�s reaction came after reports in some sections regarding the safety of the Saraighat bridge.

He said the Railways carry out regular inspection and routine maintenance of the bridge, both above and under water.

�The main structure of the bridge is in good health. The deck slab laid for road traffic on the upper tier of the bridge often develops surface cracks due to excessive stress concentration at some places which are rectified as and when needed. These are minor issues and are not threats to the bridge,� said the official.

He added, �At present, the bridge is in sound condition and structurally safe for carrying road and rail traffic. The travelling public is urged not to panic...�
