Santos strike gives Dynamos unlikely win

By Saba Nayakan

KOLKATA, Oct. 29 - Despite playing with 10-men, Delhi Dynamos FC found a late match-winner through substitute Gustavo Dos Santos three minutes into the injury time to inflict third defeat on Atletico de Kolkata in a Hero ISL-2 match at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday.

The second half was practically belonged to ATK in terms of ball control. In the final 10 minutes and four minutes of injury time the home side also enjoyed numerical superiority. Yet, the Roberto Carlos-trained Dynamos had the final laugh. The win lifted the Delhi team to 12 points from six games while the home team stayed on seven from six matches.

ATK and Dynamos dished out an insipid display in the first half where good moves were at a premium. As the 40,000 spectators wanted an improved play from the home side, the Delhi team dominated the exchanges with some neat passing game. ATK continued to rely on counter attacks and a couple of raids spelt danger but the rival defence stood firm to deny any success.

The home team made a good move on the right with Doutie sending in a measured cross which striker Hume headed firmly. Delhi goalkeeper Toni Doblas managed to collect the ball. Dynamos riposte came mid-way through the earlier half. An attempted clearance by Mondal deflected off Robin Singh and went behind the ATK defense to put Richard Gadze clear. The forward hurriedly shot over.

At the stroke of half hour mark, Doblas charged forward to clear the ball from Hume who looked threatening. The goaltender slid in strongly and brought the forward down. Jaime Gavilan failed make use of the free kick from 19 metre out.

After halftime, ATKs approach work showed a lot of improvement but all its good work went waste due to lack of firepower upfront. Legendry Brazilian Carlos decided to come in to infuse life into his team. A little later, a shot from Doutie hit Carlos leg and went goal ward but was collected by Doblas with a diving effort.

ATK pressed for the match-winner against 10-man Dynamos after Souvik Chakraborti was evicted with two yellow card booking. Yet, ATK failed to break through the rival defence.
