Sankardev Sangha body reconstituted

Narahari Ata Samannay Kshetra (Dhakuwakhona) Feb 10 � The 84th annual conference of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha (SSS) concluded here on Sunday with calls to speed up the universal form of the organisation.

The concluding day�s function was marked by a meeting of the executive body of SSS followed by a dharmalochana. A new executive committee of the Sangha was also formed in the meeting for the next two years.

Earlier on Friday, a number of books and the souvenir was released. A function on the occasion was attended by Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka, Vice Chancellor of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev University, Narayan Chandra Dev Goswami, Satradhikar of Natun Kamalabari Satra, Majuli, journalist Nitumani Saikia, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta and Dr Akhil Ranjan Dutta of Gauhati University.

The cultural session of the conference was inaugurated by noted cultural exponent Dr Anil Saikia, Principal of Moran College. A meeting to mark the occasion was chaired by Bashundhar Deka, president of the cultural wing of SSS and attended by Dr Naba Krishna Rajkhowa and Dr Om Prakash Bharati, Director of NE Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata.

The hallmark of the four-day mega event was the cultural procession of the Bhagawat on a peacock chariot on Saturday in which lakhs of followers took part. Public on either side of the road bowed in reverence as the chariot passed by. The inaugural session of the conference was chaired by Bhabendra Nath Deka.

In his speech, the Padadhikar reiterated the importance of monotheism inculcated by Srimanta Sankardev by recitation of Hari Naam and urged all to follow the inclusive formation of the society propagated by the great 15th century saint reformer. The session was attended by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti.

In her speech, Uma Bharti said that those who did not know about Srimanta Sankardev must perhaps be insular or unwise. She promised financial assistance to the Srimanta Sankardev University.

Union Youth and Sports Minister, besides local MP Sarbananda Sonowal, senior journalist Sayed Zareer Hussain and several others attended the inaugural session. The four-day mega event witnessed a sea of humanity at the Narahari Ata Sammanay Kshetra on all the days, according to the organisers.
