Sales tax official held in excise scam

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 5 - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today arrested Niru Das Medhi, inspector in-charge of sales tax department, in connection with the multi-crore-rupee tax evasion scam in the excise department.

Das Medhi was picked up after she was discharged from a city hospital, sources said, adding, the axe is expected to fall on some more senior officials of the sales tax department in the coming days.

Sources said those in the to-be-arrested list may include officials who claimed to be the whistleblowers in the scam. However, to begin with, the investigators may arrest two vital cogs in the wheel of this tax evasion scam who were hand in glove with the other accused.

The CID probing the scam in the excise department has already arrested liquor trader Rajesh Jalan, BG Bonded Warehouse owner Bonty Gogoi, excise deputy commissioner Pranjal Bora and excise deputy superintendent Amarendra Nath.

Apart from them, the investigating agency has also filed charge-sheet against excise superintendent Ajay Bayan and excise inspector Bijoy Das. Two IAS officials, including Shamsher Singh and Ahmed Hussain, were also quizzed in connection with the case.

Sources added that some of the sales tax officials maintained a very suspicious relationship with those involved in the scam, especially Rajesh Jalan, and played an important role in aiding the crime. Documents seized by the investigators have also reflected gross malfunctioning on the part of the sales tax officials, sources divulged.
