Sale of liquor banned along NH44

SHILLONG, June 28 - The East Jaintia Hills district administration issued a notification today prohibiting sale of liquor along National Highway 44.

The district administration order stated: ��Under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting selling of liquor along the National Highway 44, restaurants, hotels and dhabas in the entire district, except in the licensed bars.�

The decision has been taken in view of the recent bus accident near Sonapur in the district which claimed the lives of 25 passengers and injured nine others.

The Deputy Commissioner also called upon the people to cooperate with the district administration on the matter to strictly adhere to the order for safety of passengers and other road users along the National Highway.

�Anyone violating the order will be prosecuted,� the order stated.

Woman raped by Govt official; FIR lodged

AGARTALA, June 28 - A woman was allegedly raped by a senior Tripura Civil Service officer when she went to his residence in South Ramnagar, police said today.

An FIR was lodged against Panna Ahmed yesterday on the basis of the complaint by the woman and a search warrant has been issued against him since the accused is absconding, Superintendent of police (Police Control) Uttam Bhowmick said.

According to the FIR, Ahmed, a Joint Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Department, had allegedly raped the woman when she went to meet him at his South Ramnagar residence here for renting rooms earlier in the morning.

The accused also reportedly threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the incident, they said. � PTI
