Sale of bihuan increasing in city

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, April 6 A token of affection and respect and integral to the cultural identity of the State the bihuan is everywhere in the capital city to herald the advent of the Spring festival, the Bohag Bihu. Along with the hues of the Spring season, the bihuan in different shades has added to the festive spirit of the occasion.

With the much loved Rongali Bihu just round the corner, the sale of bihuan in the city has gone up and this time what is catching the attention of the buyers is the motif used in the bihuan. On closer examination, it will be revealed that the designs used in the bihuan reflect the society and its ethos. That much care and time has been devoted to weave these bihuans is easily gauged from the intricate designs and mixing of yarn.

The prices of the bihuan in the city are now varying between Rs 60 to Rs 170 depending on the size and intricacy of the motif. If the buyer decides on a bihuan of pat silk, he/she will feel the pinch on the purse because of the exorbitant prices.

In respect to the changing choices of the people, we are supplying bihuan that highlights the tradition, the folk culture, the transitions sweeping across the State, said Achyut Baishya, from Nalbari. His stall at Chandmari has been attracting buyers because of the designs in the bihuans. Right from the Vaishnavite culture to folk traditions, his collection showcases the State on yarn.

However Baishya said that the prices of the bihuan have been fixed reasonably. I am charging Rs 160 to Rs 170 for Bihuan with designs on both sides. The price of the simple ones is Rs 70, said Baishya. On the other hand, the price of a bihuan made of pat silk is Rs 500 to Rs 600 in the market. Though the price is really scary, the buyers seemed not to be deterred. The sale of bihuan is further expected to go up in the coming days.
