MORIGAON, Oct 15 - The 153rd birth anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa was observed at Ahotguri (his birth place) in Morigaon district on Friday under the auspices of the Morigaon district unit of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The august programme began with flag hoisting by Dhiren Chandra Das, president, Ahotguri Sakha Sahitya Sabha. This was followed by floral tribute paid at the statue of Bezbaroa. The open meeting held on the occasion was presided over by Harendra Bora, president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha.

The seminar on the topic, Relevance of Bezbaroas works in present day time was inaugurated by Narendra Nath Keot, former Principal of Morigaon College. Inaugurating the seminar, Keot lamented that the new generation of Assamese society has no knowledge of the Sahityarathis literary works. He said that the doyen of the Assamese literature had shown the path of self-employment when he ran a business at Sambalpur during the British days. Speaking on the occasion, Mileswar Pator, ex-president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha said that the spirit of Assamese nationalism prevailed in earlier part of the 20th century due to the renaissance movement created by figures like Bezbaroa. A cultural function was also organised on the occasion. In the evening, 153 earthen lights were lit by the local people.
