Sahitya Akademi Award to Dr Machahary

DIPHU, Dec 24 � After the Sahitya Akademi award winning author Aurobinda Ujir, a book of poetry Okhafwrni Dwima has once again brought pride for the people of the hill district of Karbi Anglong.

The Sahitya Akademi announced the Sahitya Akademi award for the year 2011 to the noted writer and poet Dr Premananda Machahary recently. After the announcement of award, jubilation spread throughout Karbi Anglong.

Dr Premananda Machahary was conferred Sahitya Akademi award for his poetry book Okhafwrni Dwima (A river of the Moon), written in Bodo language in the year 2007.

Machahary has been working as a lecturer at Thong Nokbe College but literature and social works have remained his abiding interests. In the beginning, he worked in a bank as a manager. Giving up the bank job, he joined the Dokmoka Thong Nokbe College near his place of residence, Langhin Tniali in Karbi Anglong. Dr Machahary has already published a number of books in Bodo, including socio-historical books, religious books and story and poetry books both in Bodo and Assamese. Besides, he has also written various film scripts for Bodo video films.

It may be mentioned here that the literary award honoured to Dr Premananda Machahary has brought massive jubilation in the entire district. Admiring the achievement of his colleague, Prabin Mahanta, Principal, Thong Nokbe College, said that this is not only a matter of pride for the college but also for the people of Karbi Anglong.

Mahanta further said that Machahary resigned from the post of bank manager due to his profound interest in social and literary works.
