S Ahmed memorial India Club tennis

By Sports Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 22: The Samsuddin memoial India Club age-group tennis championships concluded at the Club premises Sunday evening following some exciting matches, especially the finals, all of which were nail-biting affairs.

While in the above 55 age bracket PG Agarwal and Mrinal Baruah prevailed over Dipak Das and Kalyan Baruah in the closest of tie-breakers 7-6 (8-6) to lift the Sasuddin Ahmed memorial running trophy, Diganta Thakur and Subodh Mimani had the last laugh against Anupam Choudhury and Simanta Bhagawati as they combined well to clinch a narrow 7-6 (7-2) victory in the above 45 event. The above 35 doubles final produced some amazing tennis where fortunes fluctuated, as after leading 3-0, Suman Kalyan Dutta and Deepjyoti Baruah failed to keep their momentum against the consistency and never-say-die attitude of Simanta Bhagawati and Rajib Dutta with the latter duo clinching the match 7-5 in a reflection of the spirit in their upset victory against Partha Sarathi Mahanta and Rajneesh Goswami (6-3) in the semifinal.

The maiden family event too was a close affair as brothers Amlandeep and Anirban Das got the better of the father-son pair of PG Agarwal and Ashish.

Later, Zaiba Ahmed in presence of her family members gave away the prizes to the winners after successful completion of the event, thanks to the organizational efficiency of Club tennis secretary Rajib Bora and others.
