Rupkonwar�s bust installed at Gauripur

GAURIPUR, Dec 20 - A bust of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla was formally installed at the intersection of JP Agarwalla Road and NH-31 here today.

Constructed under the initiative of social activist Bijoy Kumar Jain of Gauripur in association with the local branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha, the bust was unveiled by the Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri, Nazrul Islam amidst a large number of dignitaries, intellectuals, journalists and members of various branches of Asam Sahitya Sabha, besides members of the general public.

At the beginning of the function, Suhini Devi inaugurated the unveiling programme by ceremonially breaking a coconut, while earthen lamps were lit by the Deputy Commissioner as local MLA BK Mushahary garlanded the statue of Rupkonwar.

Various organisations, including Lekhika Samaroh Samiti, Press Club and students� bodies paid floral tributes to the legendary filmmaker.

A memorial meet organised on the occasion was presided over by Satyabrat Chakrabarty, president of Gauripur branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha. A large number of dignitaries, including the president of Dhubri district Sahitya Sabha, Subarna Saikia Bardoloi, chief secretary of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti, Panchu Gopal Chakrabarty, former vice president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Prof GN Goswami, retired Principal of Dhubri BN College DN Adhikary, assistant secretary of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Abdul Hasan SK, president of Dhubri Zila Sahitya Sabha, besides a few others.

Earlier, Bijoy Kumar Jain read out the welcome address. The speakers appreciated the efforts of BK Jain for installing the bust of Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla at Gauripur, a culturally rich town of the State.

The meeting started after presentation of the song Siro Senehi Mur Bhasa Janani sung by Prenam Barua and her colleagues. Dr Upendrajit Sharma anchored the entire programme.
