JAMUGURIHAT, March 7 As per the decision of the Government of Assam to dig ponds in the name of Ahom Swargdee Rudra Singha, the digging of a pond at Naduar Anchalik panchayat has begun. The pond at Nandikeswar Devalaya (Burha Gosai Than), Jamugurihat will cost Rs 25 lakh. An amount of Rs 3 lakh has been released in Chilabandha Gaon Panchayat in a plot of land measuring 6 bighas of the devalaya and digging of the pond has already begun under MGNREGA engaging 50 job card holders.
It may be noted here that Swargdeo Rudra Singha had established this dewalaya in 1697 on a plot of land measuring 1154 bigha 4 katha and 16 lecha to the possession of the Thakur of the devalaya. In 1975, the Assam Government leaving only 9 bighas to the devalaya took over the remaining land under Ceiling Act and distributed the same to the tenants. According to the devalaya management committee, a portion of the land is still under encroachment. They have appealed to the encroachers to free the land so that the pond could be dug successfully.
