RTI Week observed across Nagaland

DIMAPUR, Oct 14 - Along with the rest of the country, RTI Week was observed across Nagaland on Tuesday. As part of the observation, Kohima district administration organised a one-day workshop-cum-seminar at the Kohima DC�s conference hall.

Speaking on the theme �RTI and village administration�, the resource person, State Coordinator, Disaster Management, ATI Kohima, Dr Hovithal N Sothu said that the main objective of the RTI Act was to create a practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure transparency and accountability of public authorities to grant a statutory right to information for every citizen and to contain corruption.

The Dimapur district also observed RTI Week in the conference hall of Dimapur DC on October 12 in the presence of Village Councils chairmen and Village Development Board secretaries. As many as 12 villages along with women representatives took part in the programme.

Delivering the keynote address, Dimapur DC Kesonyu Yhome highlighted the importance of RTI as an important tool for any public seeking information from any government institution.

Mon district too observed RTI week at the Mon DC�s conference hall on October 12 with Deputy Commissioner W Honje Konyak as the special guest. In his speech, Konyak stressed on the importance of knowing the Right to Information Act and said it enables people to understand the activities and the functioning of various government agencies. He informed that the purpose of the Act is to have transparency and accountability in the working system of the government agencies as the public has every right to know the information regarding their activities and functions.

RTI Week was observed in Wokha on October 8 in the DC�s conference hall. Emphasising on the importance of RTI Act, Wokha DC, A Robin Lotha said the Act is a powerful tool to seek information pertaining to the functioning and activities of Government departments to bring about transparency and accountability. While appealing to the gathering to meaningfully and tactfully utilise the Act, he also urged them to spread awareness among the public to seek information in the right perspective and within the right framework of the Act for the benefit of the community.
